An animal adult, whether human or non-human, is one who has grown in all its potential. Adults are a social concept and a legal one in the human world. In contrast to a non-adult or "minor" legally adult is a person who is at the point of majority and is therefore regarded as independent, self-sufficient, and accountable. A legal adult can be described as a major. It is generally accepted that the age at which a person legally matures is 18. However, this can vary depending on legal rights and the country of origin and also on the psychological state.

Adulthood refers to the period in human life when an individual has reached maturity both in physical and mental development. Commonly, adulthood begins around age 21, or 20. It is generally believed that middle age begins around 40 years old, then it will be about 60. There are three major levels of adulthood: early adults (18 to mid-30s) and middle adulthood (mid-30s until mid-60s) and then later adulthood (mid-60s until end of life). When we reach early adulthood we have reached the fullest physical maturation. Yet, our height and our weight can rise. When we reach early adulthood, our physical abilities reach their maximum. These include muscle strength and reaction time.
