Katarina Witt started to ice skate when she was five. When her talent for skating became more apparent, she received an entry at the Karl-Marx-Stadt school that is geared towards kids with a athletic ability. Her coach Jutta was also in attendance. Witt placed second in the World Championships of Copenhagen in 1982. This marked her debut. Her elegance and grace caught everyone's attention at that time, and from then onwards she was dominating the sport. Olympic success At the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt came through a closely race to claim the women's figure skating gold medal. The winner of the competition was a more competitive race the following year. Witt actually fell short of the free skating contest, however she earned the gold medal based upon her results during the compulsory figure and the short programme. Witt became the women's first multiple winner in figure skating after Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her accomplishments in the film industry as an actress. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Although she did not win an award for gold, the young skater won over the audience. Witt received her induction to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame, 1995.
